Gay Friendly Things To Do in Kamloops, British Columbia

I’ve only been to Kamloops during the winter time (with plans to go back during the summer), so any of the non-winter recommendations are from my local gays in the Kamloops community and they have great tastes so I fully trust their fabulous recommendations for summer time activities!🌈

1) Skiing & Snowboarding in Kamloops ⛷️

I highly recommend skiing at Sun Peaks Resort during the winter (YouTube video coming soon)! I found that the ski hills at Sun Peaks had much more variety of easy to difficult slopes. I like challenging hills, but I also love scenic runs, and Sun Peaks had an abundance of scenic ski routes to enjoy.

The highlight for me was the fabulous village! No, not a fabulous “gay village”, but a village full of shops and beautiful European architecture. The village in Sun Peaks feels like you’re in Europe with its architecture and curved streets. Apparently, the village is modeled after a South Tyrolean village, which you can tell by the stucco hotels and shops clustered around a central clock tower.

Either way, Sun Peaks Resort is super romantic and magical. My gay friends are actually getting married at the Sun Peaks Grand Hotel, where I stayed, during the summer and it’s honestly a beautiful spot to celebrate love; whether for your love of skiing or with your significant other.

2) Horseback Riding in Kamloops

I’m all about riding things; four-wheelers, merry-go-rounds, etc, but I’ve never properly had the chance to go horseback riding! I rode around a horse in Mexico for the first time (video coming soon), but only in circles with my straight friend Mike Corey. #BrokebackCircles

I’ve always wanted to go out back in the fields or mountains and go horseback riding and my local gays told me Kamloops is a great place for riding! I’m sure many readers love horses or love to partake in some horseback riding, so this is something you could totally do while in Kamloops!

3) Drinking Wine in Kamloops (Wine Tastings)

Just like my spirit animal Amy Schumer, I love wine and wine tours! Unfortunately, all the winery tours were closed during the winter, but if you come to Kamloops during the warmer weather, definitely check out some wine tours! Apparently many tourists come to Kamloops just for the area’s wine! I definitely have plans to re-visit Kamloops in the summer and go wine tasting and so should you! However, if you find yourself in Kamloops in the winter, just find a liquor store and buy some local wine for your own private tasting, which is what I did 😉

If you enjoy wine just as much as I do, check out Kamloops Tourism’s wine tours website to pick the perfect wine tour for you when you visit Kamloops: www.tourismkamloops.com/winetours

4) Eating in Kamloops

Hungry? Thirsty? Grab some coffee and food at The Art We Are Artisan Market and enjoy this quirky little place that has lots of local artists crafts and paintings on display. This is also the only “LGBTQ+ friendly” coffee shop / food place in Kamloops that I could find based on establishments showcasing some sort of rainbow sticker or sign at the front entrance signifying it’s support of safe spaces for the LGBTQ+ community.

5) Shopping for Gifts / Souvenirs in Kamloops

If you’re going to shop for souvenirs and gifts, go to The Golden Buddha! It’s the only “Gay-friendly” shop I could find in Kamloops and their selection of items are great! You should definitely make a visit and support them if you plan to buy gifts/souvenirs! As always, support the local gay-friendly places in the cities you travel to! #ShopLocalShopGay

6) Hiking in Kamloops⛰️

I LOVE HIKING! Unfortunately, I didn’t get to go hiking during my visit to Kamloops. However, my Kamloops friends recommended the following hiking spots to visit during the winter & summer time: Kenna Cartwright, Peterson Creek, Battle Bluffs, and Cinnamon Ridge. These are areas to hike from easiest to most challenging⛰️

7) Winter Tubing in Kamloops ⛄

You can go winter tubing at Sun Peaks for $1 cheaper, but I wanted to give another option for winter tubbing that came highly recommended! Winter tubing at Harper Mountain in Kamloops! What’s great about Harper Mountain is that they also have evening tubing & skiing most times during the winter season!

8) Camping in Kamloops ️

This is a view on the way to Lac Le Jeune Provincial Campground, which is apparently a popular camping spot in Kamloops! My friend Nic, who’s photo I used above, highly recommends coming here if you want to go camping while in the Kamloops area!⛺

9) Ziplining in Kamloops

I love ziplining and when my Kamloops friends recommended zip lining in the area I had to include it in this list! Apparently, the best zip lining is outside of the city and in a village called Chase, B.C. It’s about a 30-40 mins drive, similar to Sun Peaks to do this activity, but totally worth it!

10) Picnic near Kamloops Lake

A post shared by Nic (@niicadam) on

I’ve been told that the best spot during the summer for a romantic picnic is to overlook Kamloops Lake!

Overall, great date idea and the view of Kamloops Lake is B-E-A-UTIFUL!

Sounds a lot like the best things to do in my hometown of Vail, Colorado. We have a saying here that we moved here for the winters but stayed because of the summers. Skiing is awesome but hiking, biking and just being outdoors in the summer is fabulous. #WeekendWanderlust

I have yet to explore Colorado (but it’s definitely on my list), but I could imagine that it’s exactly like most parts of Canada. Where you move for the winters, but stay because of the summers are just so fabulous! I’m excited to be exploring more of Canada this summer, especially since it’s our 150th Birthday #Canada150
